Darren Aronofsky's gripping story won Natalie Portman an Academy Award for Best Actress for her brilliant portrayal of a troubled ballerina and was nominated for five more Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. In this powerful drama, a young ballerina (Portman) slowly cracks under the pressure after taking on the coveted lead in Swan Lake. Nina is a very talented ballerina whose life is completely consumed with dance. When her artistic director decides to replace the prima ballerina for the opening production of their new season, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily, who impresses him as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side - a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.
