Mark David Chapman (Leto) shocked an entire nation when he murdered John Lennon, the beloved 40-year old pop icon and peace activist, outside his New York apartment on December 8, 1980. Chapman, a lonely, socially awkward Beatles fan, both idolized Lennon and had an overwhelming desire to kill him. Fueled by an obsession with the fictional character Holden Caulfield from J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, the mentally unstable 25-year-old’s motives were driven by delusion and paranoia, which ultimately led him to alter the course of history in one shattering moment.
