From Oscar-winning director Robert Benton (Kramer vs. Kramer, Places in the Heart), this ensemble drama revolves around a group of love-starved romantics in Portland, Oregon. While dealing with the fallout from his failed marriage, Bradley (Kinnear), an unlucky-in-love coffee shop owner, finds himself attracted to a real-estate agent (Mitchell), unaware that she is having an affair with a married man (Burke). Elsewhere Oscar (Toby Hemingway), a coffee-shop employee, falls for his new colleague (Alexa Davalos), a free-spirited beauty who believes their romance is destined to fail.

All of these romances and relationships unfold before Harry Stevenson (Freeman), a local professor who frequents the coffee shop. Although wise about the sacrifices and joy of love, he is suffering his own heartbreak.
