Adapted from Stephen King’s classic horror tale, James Caan stars as best-selling novelist Paul Sheldon, who crashes his car after finishing his latest novel. Injured and near death, Paul is rescued by a reclusive former nurse named Annie Wilkes (Bates in her Oscar-winning role). Claiming to be Paul’s most avid fan, she takes him to her remote mountain home to nurse him back to health. When Annie reads Paul’s latest work, she becomes enraged after learning that he has killed off Misery, the heroine from his popular series of novels. With Paul confined to bed, an unstable Annie insists he rewrite the ending. Meanwhile, a local sheriff (Richard Farnsworth) and Paul's agent (Lauren Bacall) attempt to track down the missing author, unaware of the danger he’s in.
