This Oscar-winning tale tells the story of an Irish musician (Hansard) who earns extra money playing his guitar on the streets of Dublin. Still heartbroken over the end of his latest relationship, he remains cynical and vulnerable. During one performance, he meets a Czech immigrant (Irglová) who plays piano and has a gift for songwriting. After she encourages him to quit his day job and follow his dream, the star-crossed duo decides to team up to record a demo of his songs. As the two combine their talents, the songs they create chronicle their blossoming romance.
