Bruno (Butterfield) lives a wealthy lifestyle in Germany along with his mother, elder sister, and his father, a Nazi soldier (Thewlis). When his father is assigned to commandeer a prison camp, the family relocates, joining him at his new post. Unaware that the grounds he lives on is in fact, a concentration camp, Bruno befriends another youth named Shmuel (Jack Scanlon), who lives behind an electrified fence. Bruno knows that his friendship with Shmuel is dangerous, but after witnessing brutal violence perpetrated against some very kind people, he is no longer sure what to make of his soldier father, whom he once believed to be a hero.
