At seventeen, Ted (Stiller) met the girl of every man's dreams, Mary Jensen (Diaz), but after school ended that year, Ted never saw her again. Although Ted hasn't seen her in over ten years, his heart still flutters at the recollection of her. He even hires private eye Pat Healy (Dillon) to track her down in Miami. However, Healy is the type of guy who, after finding Mary in Miami, lies to his client about her current situation. Obsessed with Mary, Healy lies about his own background in trying to win her love. When Ted finds out about his lies, a competition for Mary's affections ensues with hilarious and disastrous results.
