Frank Falenczyk (Kingsley) is a hit man for his Polish mob family in New York. Because of his drinking problem, he messes up an assignment that puts the family business in jeopardy. In response, his uncle sends him to San Francisco where he reluctantly attends AA meetings. While working at a mortuary, he falls for Laurel (Leoni), a dangerously free-spirited woman. Back in New York, a rival gang is threatening the family business and when violence erupts, Frank is forced to return home with Laurel as his unlikely partner.
